In recent years sport-based crime prevention programmes have become increasingly popular throughout the world. This book takes stock of research evidence on the impact of these programmes on youth crime and gang recruitment. Another goal of this effort is to identify and clarify the links between criminological theory, youth development, and sport-based crime prevention programmes. In addition, this book identifies emerging successful practices for promoting youth development through sport-based programmes for crime prevention purposes. The book starts with a discussion of crime prevention and examines the role of sport participation and sport-based programme at the various levels of crime prevention (that is, primary, secondary, and tertiary). Next, the book attempts to conceptualize the links between criminological theory and sport-based crime prevention programmes. The following chapter is devoted to identifying good practices within these programmes and addresses the question of what can be done to maximize investments in sport-based programmes. After this, the focus of the book shifts to the role of coaches and the impact of coaching practices on youth development. The book concludes with a discussion of the evaluation of a sport-based crime prevention programme and a reflection on their evaluability.
